Professor S.C.O. Ugbolue, MSc, PhD, CText, FTI, FPIN, FTRAN, FIPMD, Hon FTI is a distinguished academic, researcher, author, administrator, and inventor. He is acknowledged as the first Professor of Polymer Science and Textile Technology (1983) in the Nigerian University System. He obtained his PhD degree from the School of Chemical and Materials Sciences, University of Strathclyde in 1974. He was an Industrial Engineer at Courtaulds Ltd UK, and Research Scientist at Burlington Research Inc, USA.
He joined the Department of Chemistry, Ahmadu Bello University as a Lecturer in Polymer Science and Technology in 1976, became Senior Lecturer in 1978 and Reader in 1981. He served as the pioneer Head of Dept. of Textile Science and Technology, at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria. He later joined the Federal University of Technology Owerri as pioneer academic staff in 1981and served as Coordinator, Polymer Science and Textile Technology, Director of Chemical Sciences and Technology Programmes, Dean of Science, Dean of Postgraduate School, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) before retiring. He then took up appointment as Professor/Full-time Faculty in the Department of Materials and Textiles at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth for 13 years before retiring once more. Thereafter, he worked as Chairman & Managing Consultant for Scudin LP, Taunton, MA, USA.
He received several research grants from the State of Massachusetts Strategic Environmental Programs, National Textile Center USA, Department of Commerce, USA, US Department of Homeland Security Projectand US Navy. He holds several US and World patents onMethod of enhancing dyeability of polymers, Auxetic fabric structures and related fabrication methods. He has research interests in Auxetic textile fabrics and structures for blast/ ballistic/stab protection, and vascular stents/grafts, Electrospinning and Nanotechnology, and Process, Structure Property relationships of polymers and advanced engineering materials.
He is author of many peer-reviewed scientific papers and books and a consultant to the polymer and textile industries.He is a Fellow of the Textile Institute, Manchester, Fellow of the Polymer Institute, Distinguished recipient of Hon FTI from the Textile Institute Manchester, Fellow of the Textile Researchers Association of Nigeria, Senior Member American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Senior Member American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists and Fellow of Institute of Policy and Management Development. He is a reviewer and Editor of many journals in polymer science and textile engineering. His latest bookpublished by Elsevier and Woodhead Publishers UK is titled Polyolefin Fibres: Structure, Properties and Industrial Applications, Second Edition, 2017.
Presently he is the Ag. Vice-Chancellor of Edwin Clark University, Kiagbodo Delta State, Nigeria. Prior to his new assignment, he was a Professor and Dean, School of Postgraduate Studies, Dean of Science and Director of Academic Planning and Quality Assurance since 2016 at Edwin Clark University, Kiagbodo, Delta State.
