Profile of HOD Industrial Chemistry

Dr. Awatefe Kehinde Jonathan was appointed as Senior lecturer on the 4th of September 2018 as adjunct lecturer, and then as contract staff on the 4th of September 2019, in Chemical Science Department. He obtained his B.Sc. Chemistry and MSc Industrial Chemistry at Howard University and Atlanta University, U.S.A, respectively. His current research in the area of polymer (Rubber) compounding, using waste material as reinforcing fillers. He was appointed as the Head of Department (HOD) January 2023.

DESCRIPTION OF THE DEPARTMENT OF CHEMICAL SCIENCES

The department of Chemical Science was created at the inception of the University in 2015. There are three distinctive programmes in the department, i.e, B.Sc. Industrial Chemistry, B.Sc. Chemistry and B.Sc Biochemistry.

Admission into the university is through the University Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) programme of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

Specific department requirement include: minimum of (5) credit level passes in SSCE/ GCE O Level , NECO/ NATEB or it’s equivalent, obtained  not more than two sittings. The five (5) credits passes must include English language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Biology. Candidate awaiting result may apply. All application will be required to go through the ECU’s screening Exercise and the post – UME screening result must be acceptable to the faculty and departments.

PHILOSOPHY

The philosophy of the Department is to produce students with practicable knowledge skills, attributes and fundamentals in Chemical Sciences and Technology, relevant for solving complex challenges of the immediate communities, the Niger Delta and Nigeria in a sustainable and responsible manner.

VISION

The vision of the Department is to be recognized as the best of its contemporaries with a knowledge excellence in research, innovation instruction/ learning and education structure that will assume leadership positions within Chemical and other associated industries as well as contribute in dynamic, technology centered – world.
