OUR COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABLE KNOWLEDGE: DIGITAL PRESERVATION AND OPEN ACCESS FOR A GREENER FUTURE
At Edwin Clark University Library, sustainability goes beyond environmental responsibility;it encompasses the long-term preservation of knowledge and the promotion of equitable access to information. As part of our Library Sustainability Project, we are dedicated to digital preservation and open access, ensuring that valuable academic resources remain accessible for future generations while reducing our environmental footprint. Digital preservation is at the heart of our sustainability efforts, allowing us to safeguard rare and historical materials while minimising reliance on print resources. Through digitisation, we are converting key academic materials including books, rare manuscripts, archival documents, and institutional research outputs into digital formats, making them available through a secure online repository. This initiative enhances research accessibility, extends the lifespan of academic resources, and significantly reduces paper consumption. A major milestone in this project is the development of an institutional repository, providing an open-access platform where faculty, researchers, and students can deposit and share scholarly works, such as theses, dissertations, and research papers. This ensures global visibility for research, facilitates knowledge exchange, and strengthens collaboration between scholars worldwide. By eliminating the need for multiple printed copies, our repository also contributes to sustainable knowledge sharing. To further promote sustainability, the library actively supports Open Educational Resources (OER), offering freely available teaching and learning materials that replace traditional textbooks. This not only reduces the financial burden on students but also minimises the production of printed materials. Additionally, we have expanded our digital journals and e-books collection, providing seamless access to academic content without the environmental impact of printing and shipping. Our commitment to open access extends to strategic partnerships with national and international organisations that advocate for freely available academic resources. Through these collaborations, we contribute to global open-access repositories, offer faculty training on open-access publishing, and champion institutional policies that support unrestricted knowledge dissemination. The impact of these initiatives is already evident in the significant reduction of paper waste, increased accessibility of educational materials, and enhanced global reach of university research. Moving forward, we plan to expand our digital repository to include multimedia content, introduce training programmes on digital preservation techniques, and advocate for university-wide policies that encourage open-access publishing and sustainable research practices. At Edwin Clark University Library, sustainability is about more than just conserving resources—it is about shaping a future where knowledge is preserved, shared, and made accessible to all. Through digital preservation and open access, we are building a more inclusive, efficient, and environmentally responsible academic environment that empowers students, researchers, and scholars for generations to come.
